Japanese Trick Box 4-step
Four moves to the compartment. The way into himitsu-bako.
A gift that does not open straight away. Four moves in the right order and the lid gives way, and under it is whatever was put inside. The patterns on the surface are yosegi zaiku from the Hakone region, a craft handed on there for generations.

About this box
Yosegi Zaiku means assembled wood. Rods of different woods are glued together until the cross-section shows a geometric motif, and from that block the craftsman planes a layer as thin as paper and lays it on the box. No paint and no stain: every shade is the wood itself.
Four moves is the friendly way in. If you have never held a secret box before you will find the way within minutes, and that is what makes it a gift: the puzzle holds you up long enough to be fun and not so long that it annoys.
Inside there is room for a piece of jewellery, a handwritten note or a key. The box measures 117 x 82 x 57 mm outside and the compartment 75 x 60 x 38 mm. Nothing is glued and nothing is sprung, so it closes again and can be given a second time.
